The charter school cha cha returns

What part of “no charter schools” do the people pushing to destroy public education refuse to understand? An initiative was filed today to, guess what, bring charter schools to our fine state. Three times voting them down not enough?  Washingtonians, please pay attention. If you don’t sign this, it won’t get on the ballot.  WEA positions follow.


Assessing assessment

WEA RA delegates are currently discussing and debating the good, the bad and the ugly about high stakes testing. Discussion is centered around a national resolution protesting high-stakes standardized testing. The resolution was released this week by a coalition of groups. Earlier this month, some 500 students north of Seattle refused to take a high stakes test in protest. Weigh in on this as your colleagues are at RA.

Romney takes page out of education playbook of President George W. Bush

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finally got around to talking about education on the campaign trail, announcing his team of education policy advisors and his education platform. “If you liked President George W. Bush’s education legacy, you’re going to love Mitt Romney’s education vision for America if he’s elected president,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. “Not only did he recycle many of the key education players from the Bush administration but he’s also pursuing some of the failed policies that hurt students and schools.”
 

Success in competency-based remedial math program

When Richland High School math teacher Jenny Gatherer entered the graduate program at WGU Washington, a NEA Academy partner, she had no idea how remarkable her journey would become. Her plan was to work on her degree at the state-endorsed, online, nonprofit university while teaching a new curriculum to students who hated math.

Grants for WEA ESP members

The Washington Education Association is offering three scholarships of $1,000 each this year to educational support professionals who are pursuing a teaching career.

 

California middle school teacher is national Teacher of the Year

Rebecca Mieliwocki, an English teacher at Luther Burbank Middle School in Burbank, Calif., was named national Teacher of the Year Monday for her unconventional teaching practices and her deep commitment to helping students succeed. President Obama will honor her and all of the State Teachers of the Year at a White House ceremony Tuesday.

 

Boot Camp for special educators

Registration is now open for the 2012 Special Education Training/Special Education Boot Camps. Three sessions, presented by the Washington Education Association Special Education Cadre, will be held this summer across the state.

 

$96 million tax bump is good news -- & a sign to stop going backward

The Washington state Economic and Forecast Council reported that revenue projections had increased by $96 million compared to previous projections in November. Randy Dorn notes that it's good news, but not enough.
 

SPI says Washington state will apply for No Child Left Behind waiver

State Superintendent Randy Dorn has announced that he will apply for a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind sanctions.
